Basketball has always meant more than just a game for Ryan Marvin Aguro —it is a lifelong dream made of passion, work, and his father's undying support. Now that he is 24 years old and studying BSIT at Northern Iloilo State University, Aguro has found himself at the crossroads in his career as he led his school, NISU Blue Marlins, to its triumphant championship win. His journey is a testament to how persistence can turn dreams into reality, marked by dedication and resilience.
Aguro developed interest in playing basketball at the start of grade 7 and was further motivated by his father, who always supported him in his efforts to follow his dreams in basketball. "He would always remind me to work hard and never give up," said Aguro on the base of his journey.
Not to be forgotten, though, were the challenges of this year's tournament. One of the grueling games in Aguro's career, he said, was against CAPSU Stingrays in the semi-finals. "It was a test of endurance and teamwork," he recalled. However, the game against UA Red Ants during the championship really tested him and his teammates.
"The pressure was immense," Aguro said. "UA was a strong opponent, and we had to give everything we had. But our discipline and preparation made the difference."
It was the hard-fought 90-83 victory over UA, bringing the championship trophy back to the Blue Marlins after last year's defeat. It was Aguro's dream come true.
"We are all elated that the championship trophy is finally back in NISU after last year's heartbreak. This win is huge for us as a team and for all those who have supported us throughout this journey."
"All the sacrifices and countless hours we spent in practice in the last three months have actually paid off. It's not easy, but work and determination have been the driving factors for us.
We are very thankful to our coaching staff, especially Atty. James Balsomo II, for guiding us every step of the way. They didn't just teach us strategies and skills; they instilled in us the value of discipline, both on and off the court, which made this triumph possible."
Aguro thanks his coaches and teammates for shaping him not just as a player but as a person. "Basketball is more than just a game; it teaches you discipline, respect, and resilience," he said. These lessons are something he carries with him both on and off the court.
Looking into the future, Aguro hopes to inspire the next generation of players to dream big and work hard. His father inspired him as he looks ahead. "Always give your best and remember that success comes to those who prepare for it," he advised.
Not in the number of points one scores but in the number of hearts given to a game.
For Ryan Marvin Aguro, the championship means not just a victory. It is a testament of the power of determination and teamwork and of the indomitable pursuit of the elusive dream.

RSCUAA24 PR TEAM: QUIET CHRONICLERS BEYOND THE SPOTLIGHT
By Herman M. Lagon, Chairperson, Public Relations Committee, RSCUAA 2024
As the final whistle of RSCUAA 2024 fades, the spotlight turns to those who quietly made it all possible. The Public Relations Committee—composed of 50 campus journalists, student volunteers, faculty, and staff—worked diligently behind the scenes, embodying teamwork and service beyond the challenges to ensure the success and spirit of RSCUAA 2024 resonated far and wide. Their journey was not about grandeur but showing up, giving their best, and living out Magis: the call to strive for the greater good.
From their first press release in October and skills training in November to their final scoreboard update this Friday, December 20, the team’s journey has been one of purpose, not perfection. Their achievements are nothing short of remarkable: over 18 million views, 1.4 million engagements, 27,000 followers, two press conferences, five in-depth radio and TV interviews, 15 media outlet partners, 200+ articles produced, 800+ Messenger inquiries answered, 400+ scoreboards, posters, and pubmats designed and shared, 50,000+ photos captured, 100+ videos shown using 250GB GDrive —all within just 28 days. Yet, these impressive numbers tell only part of the story. Behind the stats are late-night edits, last-minute pubmat revisions, improvised livestream setups, frantic equipment fixes, quick snack breaks, whispered pep talks, endless GC convo, exhausted but determined smiles, and quiet moments of camaraderie fueled by unlimited candies, coffee, cookies, and chismis—proof of the grit, grace, and growth that brought this extraordinary feat to life.
Their achievements on steroids were not about metrics but meaning. The real magic lay in the hours spent working through glitches, making do with limited resources, and finding joy in small victories. These were not just tasks to complete; they were opportunities to learn, grow, and connect in ways that transcended the regional sports festival—of 42 events, 22 venues spanning three municipalities and two cities, participated in by 13 state universities with 3,500 athletes and coaches, representing 115,000 college students from six provinces of Western Visayas—itself.
None of this would have been possible without the leadership, trust, and support of University President Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr., General Secretariat Chairperson Dr. Edmer Bernardo, and the many other teams and committees who stood as pillars of encouragement. Their patience, understanding, guidance, assistance, and support, laid the foundation for the dedicated students, public affairs team, MIS team, school paper advisers, and countless others who worked tirelessly to bring this event to life through their tasks and craft.
Of course, there were missteps. No undertaking of this scale is without its challenges—technical hiccups, last-minute changes, typo oversights, stress-induced tension, and occasional plan changes. But what defined this team was their resilience. Every challenge was met with determination and an eagerness to improve, transforming each setback into a stepping stone toward something better.
This spirit of service—of doing more than what is asked—reflected the heart of Magis. Many on the team may not have realized it then, but their sacrifices, from sleepless nights to endless assignments, were quiet heroism. They gave not for accolades but for the shared goal of making RSCUAA 2024 a success for everyone involved.
As this chapter closes, the bonds formed and lessons learned will endure. The friendships forged in the trenches of this event and the skills sharpened under its pressures are gifts that will carry forward into every future challenge. These are memories and the foundation for a lifetime of growth, friendship, and collaboration.
We offer our deepest thanks to the parents and guardians who allowed these young individuals to step into this demanding role. Your trust gave them the space to rise to the occasion, and their growth—both in character and capability—stands as a testament to their dedication and your support.
Most of all, we want to sincerely thank the divine for guiding us through tough challenges. With faith and determination, we faced obstacles that often felt overwhelming. This journey has not only strengthened our resolve but also highlighted the incredible power of community and working together toward a shared purpose through grace.
To the PR team, you have earned your rest and videoke shindig. Celebrate your achievements, but remain grounded, knowing this experience is just the beginning. Though intense and challenging, your work has left a lasting mark on the event and everyone who witnessed your commitment.
In the spirit of Magis and human excellence, greatness lies not in being seen but in how you choose to serve. To the golden 50, part of the many quiet heroes of RSCUAA 2024, thank you for your dedication, humility, and heart. Mission accomplished. Magis fulfilled.#

Among ten towering men pacing their sidelines, barking orders with authority, one figure stands apart—not by stature, but by spirit. She’s not just any coach; she’s Head Coach Sheila Gumabong of the University of Antique’s men's basketball team and rewriting the rules. Her sneakers whisper across the polished hardwood, a rhythmic accompaniment to her sharp commands that cut through the roaring crowd. Her players don’t just hear her voice—they feel it, a resonant force driving them forward.
Coach Sheila calls it “mothering,” a curious mix of care and control, but it’s far from gentle. Her decisive energy, razor-sharp instincts, and ability to forge her team into an unbreakable unit make her extraordinary. Under her leadership, the Red Ants have swept through their competition, notching a four-game win streak that has stunned powerhouse programs from rival universities.
But who is this trailblazer in a traditionally male domain? Coach Sheila, a woman blazing trails in a sport long dominated by men, is the head coach of the University of Antique’s men’s basketball team. Few expected that her piercing yell—a sound that initially drew chuckles for its unexpected pitch—would propel her team to the grand finals. Yet, she silences the skeptics with every win. “Our team came here to win, so expect us to win,” she declared with unshakable conviction in a post-game interview.
Her yell isn’t just noise; it’s a battle cry, a guiding star for her team. It has orchestrated victories over teams that once ruled the court. In four matches, the Red Ants haven’t lost a single game. It's a record as immaculate as her focus.
She responded with wit and wisdom when asked how it feels to shatter stereotypes in a field often seen as men's territory. “To coach, you don't need a man's anatomy,” she quipped, pointing to her head, heart, and upward. "What you need is this—and faith." Coach Sheila's journey is a testament to breaking barriers, aligning perfectly with the RSCUAA's central theme: inclusivity.
But let's not forget the players—their grit, grind, and growth. The Red Ants embody teamwork, and every gesture echoes discipline and determination. They've turned their practice sessions into symphonies of precision and patience; each plays a testament to their relentless drive. “We owe it all to 'Mommy,’” team captain Ace Ardeño said. "She's sacrificed so much for us; her guidance has been our greatest asset."
Coach Sheila isn't just a coach; she's their matriarch. She jokes about her age and embraces the title with pride. She's more than a strategist to her players—she's a source of comfort, wisdom, and strength.
Now, the University of Antique's Red Ants stands one step away from history, advancing to the finals with their eyes on the Nationals. As the finals approach, all eyes are on Coach Sheila and her Red Ants, poised to prove that leadership knows no gender.

ISUFST BAGS 2 GOLDS, 4 SILVERS, 10 BRONZES IN ARNIS AT RSCUAA
December 19, 2024
The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) ISDA Blue Thunders claimed an impressive medal haul in the Arnis competition at the Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (RSCUAA) VI 2024, securing a total of 16 medals—two golds, four silvers, and ten bronzes—on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at Bungca Covered Gym, Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo.
The National SCUAA-bound Blue Thunders' Mark Vincent Asumbra and Rhea Grace Omison spearheaded the victories, each clinching gold medals in the Live Stick category. Asumbra, who, like Omison, also earned a silver medal in Padded Stick, expressed gratitude for his coach, parents, and supporters, saying, "Our preparation was intense, but the guidance of my coach and the support of my ISUFST family made all the difference."
Omison, coached by Instr. Irene Berdan, mirrored the sentiment, adding, "Winning gold is a dream come true. Our daily practices, feedback sessions, and coach and classmates encouragement motivated us to push harder."
It is worth noting that if divided by gender, ISUFST's medal haul in Arnis at RSCUAA VI 2024 includes 1 gold, 2 silvers, and 6 bronzes for the women, and 1 gold, 2 silvers, and 4 bronzes for the men, highlighting the balanced contributions from both divisions.
Their success at RSCUAA VI 2024 continues ISUFST's strong showing in national sports. Earlier this year, ISUFST athletes made waves at the National ROTC Games in August 2024, held in Indang, Cavite, where they secured two silver and one bronze medal in Arnis. Sophomore BIT student Asumbra and senior BSIT student Omison were among the medalists, further showcasing the university's growing prominence in regional and national arenas.
Amae Bayoging, under Berdan's mentorship, added to the medal tally with a silver in Padded Stick and a bronze in Live Stick, showcasing the Blue Thunders' depth of talent. "I'm proud to bring these medals home for ISUFST," Bayoging shared, emphasizing the camaraderie and discipline within the team. Meanwhile, National ROTC Games veterans Rennier Soberano and Roperly Mae Bangero also clinched bronze medals in the extra-light category for Live Stick and the Anyo Event (Individual Double Identical Weapon), respectively, bringing the team's Arnis harvest to seven medals.
Instr. Berdan credited the team's success to their dedication and discipline. "These victories reflect their commitment and hard work. Our training emphasized precision, speed, and strategy, but more importantly, it built their confidence and teamwork," Berdan noted.
Coaches played a pivotal role in guiding the athletes to their victories. Anthony J. Bejemino served as the head coach for the men's division, supported by assistant coach Instr. Kathlene Francisco. Meanwhile, Berdan took the lead in the women's division, with Dr. Ian Sugatan providing additional coaching expertise. Their combined efforts in strategizing and mentoring greatly contributed to the team's remarkable medal haul in the competition.
Several bronze medalists further highlighted the team's success. In the men's division, Emmanuel Porras (Pin Weight), Ernie John Bastan (Bantam Weight), Rogelio Notada (Half-Light Weight), and John Steven Paca-oncis (Open Weight) secured bronze medals in the live stick category. For the women, Nichole Genovea clinched two bronzes in both padded and live stick (Bantam Weight), while Ariane Claire Estorninos earned bronze in live stick (Middle Weight). Princess Ann D. Robles added another bronze in the live stick (Feather Weight). Their determination and skills were a testament to the rigorous training and strong camaraderie within the team.
The ongoing six-day RSCUAA VI 2024, themed "One Western Visayas: Promoting Peace, Inclusivity, and Well-being Through Sports," features 13 state universities, 3,500 student-athletes, and 42 events across 22 venues in Iloilo. ISUFST's achievements in Arnis, following earlier victories at the National ROTC Games, further solidify its reputation as a breeding ground for athletic excellence.
ISUFST President Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr. praised the athletes' achievements: "Our students embody the spirit of ISUFST—resilient, disciplined, and relentless in pursuing excellence. These medals are a testament to their hard work and the strong support system we've built together."
The Blue Thunders' stellar performance in Arnis underscores the university's commitment to athletic excellence and reinforces the guiding principles of inclusivity, discipline, and social responsibility.
As the RSCUAA VI 2024 continues, ISUFST's athletes remain steadfast in their pursuit of greater glory, carrying forward the pride and determination of the ISDA Blue Thunders.

Collaboration among State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) has become the cornerstone of an evolving educational landscape in the country. With a vision transcending institutional boundaries, SUCs today are forging partnerships prioritizing shared knowledge, resources, and best practices. These collaborations strengthen education’s reach and depth, especially for communities that depend on SUCs for accessible and transformative education. The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) continues to underscore the vital role of this unity, emphasizing how a network of mutually supportive institutions can drive a resilient, inclusive, and socially responsible education system for the country.
In a world where the challenges of education go beyond classrooms, SUCs collaborating in research and extension work represents a step toward real-world impact. From technology to environmental science and health initiatives, SUCs collectively tackle national priorities that demand creative solutions. Working together, they build a stronger, more cohesive front for academic output that doesn’t just stay within academic journals but extends its benefits to communities. Collaborative research does more than expand intellectual achievement; it connects institutions to the people they serve, fostering community upliftment and knowledge-sharing across the country (Medina, 2019).
The collaborative momentum extends well beyond academia into sports and student engagement events. The ongoing Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (RSCUAA) in Region VI, hosted by the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST), is an example of SUCs coming together to celebrate student talent and school spirit. Sports events like RSCUAA provide a dynamic platform where students from various regions connect, build camaraderie, and showcase their skills on a larger stage. Events like this, along with cultural festivals, debate competitions, leadership conferences, and other student-centered gatherings, strengthen campus ties, allowing students to engage with diverse backgrounds and form connections that enrich their academic journeys and personal growth.
Public-private partnerships (PPPs) add yet another dimension to this collaborative landscape. Through partnerships with the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC) and the PPP Center, SUCs now have access to critical resources that can drive infrastructure development in unimaginable ways. The PPP Code and its recent reforms, introduced through nationwide capacity-building activities, equip SUCs with tools to secure funding and expertise, leveling the playing field for institutions in rural or under-resourced areas. By bridging financial gaps, these collaborations ensure that state-of-the-art facilities and learning resources are within reach, underscoring how partnerships can lift entire communities and advance the quality of education across the board.
However, collaboration is not without its challenges. Faculty members often shoulder multiple responsibilities that can impact their enthusiasm for collaborative projects, especially in community-centered initiatives. Extension services, which are key to SUCs’ engagement with local communities, are sometimes undervalued despite their profound impact on people’s lives. Studies suggest that faculty motivation to participate in these initiatives grows when they are supported through fair incentives and adequate resources (Medina, 2019). Clear guidelines, transparent reward systems, and sustained budget support for collaborative work can transform these challenges into lasting opportunities for faculty and students alike.
These partnerships also embody a broader commitment to community-centered development. Each SUC, through its research and extension programs, plays a unique role in the areas it serves, adapting resources to meet local needs and address relevant issues. Working together, SUCs can ensure that their educational offerings and community projects are responsive, relevant, and culturally sensitive. By pooling efforts, SUCs offer a united approach to addressing community concerns, contextualizing their knowledge and resources to serve as pillars of local support.
Sharing resources within these partnerships naturally involves shared responsibility. When SUCs collaborate, they not only prevent duplicated efforts but create a synergistic impact. The University of the Philippines (UP) and other large institutions with robust research capabilities, when in partnership with provincial SUCs, offer invaluable expertise and training in agriculture, climate resilience, and engineering. These connections help smaller institutions overcome resource limitations, bringing transformative learning and solutions to more remote areas and reinforcing the idea that academic progress is fundamentally tied to social development.
This collaborative spirit also marks a philosophical shift in education. Moving beyond academic competition, these partnerships reflect a mission of service—an understanding that education’s purpose is to build a stronger, more compassionate society. By working together, SUCs channel their efforts toward the collective good, emphasizing the principle of finding meaning and purpose in shared endeavors. This commitment is not merely academic but transformative, with SUCs empowering students and educators alike to see beyond individual achievement and contribute to nation-building.
The potential for deeper, more formalized collaboration remains bright. New initiatives like the UP State Universities and Colleges Collaboration Office (SUCCO) set a pioneering example, providing a structured pathway for cooperative programs and partnerships. As these alliances align with the Philippine Development Plan, they set the stage for a renewed public education system that produces skilled graduates and fosters a generation dedicated to reinvesting in their communities. Through this network of interconnected institutions, SUCs are helping students realize that their educational journey is both personal and part of a broader effort to uplift the nation.
In the end, SUCs across the country are living examples of the strength found in collaboration. By pooling intellectual and material resources, they create a sustainable model of education that goes beyond institutional benefits and transforms into a social good. The impact of this approach stretches beyond classrooms, setting an inspiring standard for what public education can achieve. In choosing connection, inclusivity, and shared excellence, SUCs are helping to shape a stronger, more resilient educational future.
At its core, collaboration among SUCs is a powerful reminder that when institutions come together with shared purpose and dedication, they build pathways to progress, where each step is strengthened by collective resolve.

The RSCUAA 2024 Chess Tournament had its finale last December 18, at ISUFST Main Poblacion Library. Both men's and women's divisions came out winners in a hard-won victory at the end by the ISAT-U TechnoBees. Under the theme "One Western Visayas: Promoting Peace, Inclusivity, and Well-being through Sports," the regional competition on strategic battles brought out, first, unwavering faith among participants all over the region and then unshakeable confidence to win against one's opponent.
The tournament saw an amazing display of chess, where the participants put in so much skill and sportsmanship throughout the difficult games. There was so much tension when the participants went through every single planned move, where a bad decision would have swung the tables upside down. This is where the electric, silent concentration of players would go with the soft-voiced anticipation of the crowd.
In the men's division, the ISAT-U TechnoBees took the much-coveted gold medal as it showed more superior teamwork and individual brilliance. The NISU Blue Marlins also fought for the silver medal, and the UPV Fighting Maroons claimed the bronze medal, showing strength in the regional chess scene.
The women's division paralleled that of the men, as once again, ISAT-U TechnoBees tops the regional chess arena for the second time. UPV Fighting Maroons stood in to take the silver medal with SUNN SUNN Rays holding the bronze medal.
Beyond the individual wins, the tournament was a perfect platform to showcase the principles of peace, inclusiveness, and well-being, which also reflected the overall theme of the RSCUAA 2024 games. The event brought together participants who were able to bond with each other and exhibit the spirit of sportsmanship as they went beyond the competitive spirit to create a good and inclusive atmosphere. The organizers were contented with the successful holding of the tournament, citing the dedication and commitment of all participants.
The RSCUAA Chess Tournament 2024 will be remembered for excellent chess played and also by the spirit of unity and sportsmanship it fostered. This double victory of ISAT-U TechnoBees speaks to a great achievement, a good testament to their immense talent and dedication to the game. Their performance inspires would-be chess players in Western Visayas and beyond. In other words, the success of this event highlights the power of sports in positive value-building and stronger communities.

Good sportsmanship is essential in athletics. Fair competition thrives on mutual respect for teammates, opponents, and officials. True sportsmanship shifts the focus from winning alone to the character-building process inherent in every game. In a world driven by accolades and medals, the sportsmanlike athlete finds value in integrity just as much as victory, recognizing that competition merges skill, respect, and humility into one pursuit.
Currently ongoing, the Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (RSCUAA) 2024, hosted by Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST), highlights these values. Athletes from the state universities across Western Visayas embody sportsmanship, displaying the theme, “One Western Visayas: Promoting Peace, Inclusivity, and Well-Being through Sports.” This festival doesn’t merely showcase athletic prowess but is a beacon of unity, reminding us that shared principles bridge institutions and communities.
Sportsmanship means winning and losing gracefully. While everyone loves a win, defeat often reveals the strength of character more profoundly. Genuine athletes shake hands after a loss, respect the opponent’s skill, and reflect on their performance without bitterness. Research from the Positive Coaching Alliance (2021) shows that players who emphasize learning from losses and respecting outcomes are likelier to grow their skills and foster deeper relationships in their sport. This resilience is an asset that endures beyond the field, shaping individuals ready to handle life’s challenges.
Respect in sports extends far beyond players to include everyone in attendance. Parents, coaches, and fans set the tone, deeply influencing how young athletes view success and failure. A study by Sports Psychology Today (2022) points out that children with parents who model calm, supportive behavior during games are less likely to develop sports-related anxiety. When parents respect officials’ calls, cheer constructively, and support all players, they reinforce the idea that sports are about development, not just winning.
Within teams, a supportive player or coach can change the entire game dynamic. Encouraging teammates, sharing playtime, and uplifting others during mistakes fosters an environment where everyone feels valued. Recognizing teammates’ unique strengths and weaknesses develops empathy—a trait as vital off the field as it is on it.
Sportsmanship also requires self-control, especially under pressure. Managing emotions—whether sparked by a bad call, an error, or an irritating heckler—shows a maturity that benefits everyone involved. Tennis icon Serena Williams highlights this in her MasterClass, emphasizing that one of sports’ greatest challenges is maintaining composure in heated moments. Self-control not only enhances performance but also keeps the game enjoyable and safe for all.
Additionally, sportsmanship involves respecting the rules, referees, and coaches. A fair player adheres to regulations, resisting the urge to cheat, even with high stakes. Research from the Journal of Sportsmanship and Ethics (2020) reveals that athletes who honor these values enjoy a more lasting satisfaction from their achievements, knowing they’ve succeeded through genuine effort. For athletes, honesty in play builds a reputation of integrity, a quality that enriches both personal lives and future careers.
The sense of community within events like RSCUAA extends the impact of sportsmanship beyond competition. ISUFST’s hosting of the RSCUAA 2024 Sports Festival brings together athletes and supporters to celebrate athleticism and camaraderie. The event’s theme reflects shared goals of unity, peace, and inclusivity, underscoring that fierce competition can coexist with shared values that transcend rivalry.
Programs like Values Education through Sport (VETS) highlight that sports are a platform for teaching essential life skills like respect, teamwork, and self-confidence. Supported by UNESCO (2021), VETS aligns with global educational goals by integrating fair play and character-building into sports, fostering responsible citizenship. RSCUAA’s athletes exemplify these principles, embracing the philosophy of winning with dignity and losing with grace, a testament to the tournament’s broader impact on personal development.
Ultimately, every individual on the field, in the stands, or coaching from the sidelines benefits from practicing good sportsmanship. By playing a good game and cultivating good character, sports become a microcosm of life itself. The handshakes, encouraging words, and resilience shown in the ongoing RSCUAA games, for instance, remind us that each match contributes to a legacy of unity, respect, and endurance–characters that last longer than medals and trophies combined.

In RSCUAA 2024, every game is a battle of strategy and execution. The coach devises plans from the sidelines, while the player fights on the front lines. Success hinges on teamwork and genuine collaboration—a testament to the saying, “It takes two to tango.” Badminton, like any sport, thrives on this synergy.
On the court, the sharp thwack of the shuttlecock mingles with the soft squeak of sneakers—a symphony of intensity. But beyond these sounds lies something more profound: the silent, unspoken dialogue between coach and player. Though often unseen, this connection is pivotal to the game’s outcome.
For Jay Mark Besa of the CHMSU Visayan Spotted Deer, this bond was evident. Drenched in sweat, he wasn’t alone in his fight. Beside him stood Coach Jaclyn Joyce Bascar, offering quiet support and a steady hand—a presence that highlights the critical role of a coach-player relationship.
“Gina motivate [nila kami] through gaka kita ko man nga ga effort sila [his coaches] sa amon para sa sini nga hampang…” shared Besa, reflecting on how his coaches’ efforts inspired him to push harder. A coach’s dedication and encouragement fuel a player’s drive, shaping their performance and success.
In the heat of competition, the coach is the first person an athlete looks to, whether in triumph or defeat. This bond becomes the foundation of a player’s growth, fostering greater skills and strengthening team dynamics.
“Being a coach, it’s not just about the competition. Of course, we treat them as family—not just inside the court but also outside,” said Coach Bascar. For her, creating a familial connection builds trust and positivity, forming the cornerstone of a player’s journey.
A coach’s influence transcends the game, shaping players into more than just athletes. Their unwavering support builds unbreakable bonds, fostering sportsmanship on the court and friendships beyond it.

CPSU, ISUFST SHINE ON RSCUAA 2024,
SETS THE STAGE FOR A THRILLING WEEK
December 17, 2024
The 2024 Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (RSCUAA) Sportsfest opened on December 16 with a burst of energy and competition, showcasing the grit and determination of athletes across Western Visayas. Central Philippines State University (CPSU) dominated the 3x3 basketball, clinching gold after a nail-biting match against Northern Iloilo State University (NISU), whose valiant efforts earned them silver.
“We practiced hard for this, and seeing our efforts pay off is truly fulfilling,” shared CPSU’s team captain, echoing sentiments of unity and perseverance emphasized by their coach.
Meanwhile, the host school, Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST), celebrated a historic victory as Justine Franco secured their first gold medal in the men’s high jump. This feat electrified the crowd and filled his school with pride.
The opening day set the tone for an exhilarating week, with thrilling matchups across sports disciplines. In men’s basketball, NISU leads with two early wins, while West Visayas State University (WVSU), ISUFST, and NISU are locked in fierce competition in the women’s division. Baseball, softball, volleyball, and football saw powerhouse teams like WVSU, CHMSU, ISAT U, and GSU emerge as early leaders. In contrast, beach volleyball and sepak takraw featured standout performances from SUNN, ISAT U, and UA. Through the common language of athletics, athletes, and fans broke down borders and forged friendships as they honored the spirit of sportsmanship amid the tremendous action.
The promise of more intense fights and motivational moments reverberated throughout the venues as the sun fell on an incredible first day. The cornerstone values of RSCUAA 2024 are peace, inclusivity, and well-being. Students from 13 state universities and colleges brought this spirit into their weekly sports meet for good luck. Whatever the race in any event, there has never been an athletics meeting where so many new faces - unassuming in bearing but filled with hope and promise - are competing for honors of all colors.
With a mix of raw talent and dedication, peers armed with nothing more than camaraderie will see us through the initial stages of this struggle week. The games are as much about grit as they are about glory. The remaining 3 days are full of promise, and every event will be thrilling as athletes strategically strive for brilliance in each endeavor. Values of sportsmanship are magnified, and glory looms larger with every passing day. RSCUAA 2024 is an unforgettable gala in a lofty spirit and a mighty physical contest.
This year’s RSCUAA is especially significant for the 13 participating universities, as it marks the first time the event is being held at ISUFST. It also has sentimental importance for the Negros Occidental schools, as it will be the last RSCUAA for them following the passing of the Negros Island Region Act. The stakes are high as each school competes not only for medals but for the pride of their institution and the region.

In an era where classroom walls witness more than lectures, peace education has become essential in guiding young minds toward creating a world free from violence and prejudice. At its core, peace education aims to cultivate nonviolence, empathy, and critical awareness, offering students the tools to actively resolve conflicts, embrace inclusivity, and champion social justice. As the RSCUAA 2024 Sports Festival and Conference aptly themes itself around “One Western Visayas: Promoting Peace, Inclusivity, and Well-Being through Sports,” it reminds us that these values are not just for the classroom—they are integral to every community we belong to. And in a country where education often doubles as both sanctuary and battleground, the mission for peace resonates with a new level of urgency.
Historically, peace education has evolved from idealistic concepts to pragmatic approaches shaped by the experiences of diverse societies. Many schools have already shown us that integrating peace culture in teaching transforms students into advocates of respect, empathy, and nonviolence. Such initiatives are particularly relevant in our context, where diverse communities reflect a mosaic of beliefs, traditions, and histories. Teachers, therefore, play a central role in contextualizing these lessons to resonate with the youth, reinforcing the importance of inclusivity and understanding.
The potential for sports as a bridge for peace is notably visible during events like the RSCUAA Sports Festival, where students from various backgrounds gather, uniting under the banner of athletic camaraderie. As a universal language, sports inherently encourage teamwork, resilience, and respect for opponents—values that align closely with peace education. By encouraging teamwork over rivalry and respect over hostility, sports fields become arenas where students learn to navigate and celebrate diversity, promoting inclusivity and well-being.
Yet, peace education extends beyond mere activities. The challenge lies in addressing the broader learning environment that shapes students’ perspectives on conflict and collaboration. While the Department of Education’s “Matatag”curriculum claims to emphasize peace and values education, concerns arise when atrocities, masquerading as security measures, take precedence. Critics argue that fostering genuine peace requires not surveillance, red-tagging, threats, suppression, or extra-judicial killing, but cultivating critical thinking, kindness, and resilience among students. Prioritizing these qualities means revisiting policies and practices that align more with fostering growth than instilling fear.
The concept of “zones of peace,” as championed by peace advocates like human rights activist Ed Garcia, holds promise for schools. Turning campuses into these means students feel genuinely safe, valued, and supported. Here, respect, empathy, and kindness are woven into daily life. With teachers and administrators leading by example, students learn peace is an active choice. Beyond preventing bullying, these spaces foster a community where kindness flourishes and students are guided to resolve differences openly and respectfully. It’s about growing up in a world where peace is real and personal.
The emphasis on inclusivity in peace education also intersects with the journey of peace advocates like columnist Tasneem AbdulRauf, who emphasizes the need for a more inclusive Philippine history that acknowledges the contributions of Filipino Muslims. By ensuring that peace education includes diverse narratives, educators foster understanding and respect for minority identities. In this way, peace education becomes an instrument for dismantling prejudices and building bridges across cultural divides—a goal as relevant in the classroom as it is on the playing field.
At the heart of peace education is the principle that each generation must take responsibility for nurturing the culture of peace. This requires intentionality, consistency, and community collaboration. The efforts of peace advocates like Teach Peace Build Peace Movement founder Bai Rohaniza Sumndad-Usman, who promotes intergenerational peace-building, underscore the need for a long-term commitment to peace as a way of life. Her programs for children and youth emphasize fostering a mindset geared towards harmony and nonviolence—a mission that resonates across Filipino society, from classrooms to local governments and beyond.
While peace education cannot solve every societal ill, it empowers students to view themselves as agents of positive change. Felicitas Pantoja’s Coffee for Peace initiative in Mindanao exemplifies how peace-oriented projects can impact communities by addressing immediate needs—like hunger and economic security—while fostering social justice. Students exposed to these narratives learn that peace is multifaceted; it is a pursuit that addresses not only interpersonal conflicts but also societal inequities.
Teachers have the unique power to instill hope, resilience, and empathy in their students, building the next generation of peace champions. Educators carry the significant responsibility of modeling these values, especially as they guide students through lessons that extend far beyond academics. Studies in peace education have shown that democratic, student-centered approaches help create a supportive environment where students feel heard and respected. The seeds of peace grow in these settings, shaping students who approach life with compassion and discernment.

Peace education, like all transformative processes, demands perseverance and community support. It requires all stakeholders—teachers, parents, policymakers—to foster environments where nonviolence, inclusivity, and justice are everyday practices. This pursuit goes beyond declarations or curriculum adjustments; it involves rethinking how education itself can become a tool for societal harmony. In this way, peace education is a foundation upon which we build resilient communities, empowered individuals, and a just society.
As RSCUAA 2024 inspires athletes to embody the principles of peace and unity, may we also be inspired to apply these principles in every sphere of our lives. For it is in our classrooms, sports fields, and communities that the culture of peace begins—and where it will ultimately flourish.

DANCE LIKE KAREN AND MARCUS HILTON
The countdown is on for the highly anticipated RSCUAA Sports Festival and Conference Dance Sport Competition, taking place on December 18 at 6 PM at the Tamasak Arena. This event promises to be a captivating display of talent, passion, and athleticism as 26 pairs of dancers take to the floor, each embodying an indescribable connection with their partners. In just a quarter of a second, these couples will transition through intricate ballroom dance steps, igniting the stage with their exemplary prowess.
As the dancers twist and turn, the ballroom will truly be on fire—so much so that one could imagine their footwear producing smoke. Their hand points will slice through the noise of the crowd, and their glances will pierce through the atmosphere, creating an electric ambiance that is palpable. If this is just a practice, one can only imagine the intensity and excitement that awaits on December 18.
Among the competitors are 13 pairs representing the Latin American category, ready to steal the spotlight with their vibrant performances. The other half of the contenders will showcase their skills in the Modern Standard category, including ISUFST's proud representatives, Mr. Vince Michael Mateo and Ms. Angeline Saligumba. Under the expert guidance of coach Instr. Kristine M. Hofileña and trainer Kim Agregorio, this dynamic duo is set to impress with their stunning routines.
Asst. Tournament Manager Dr. Frietzie Inayan shared her enthusiasm for the upcoming event: "To witness the fantastic moves and seductive poses that will truly leave the audience speechless and jaws dropped is something everyone should look forward to." Each participating State University and College (SUC) has brought its best pairs to the dance floor, ready to sway and run with unparalleled energy.
A range of dance forms, such as the passionate Rumba, the elegant Foxtrot, and the upbeat Samba, will be showcased during the tournament. Like famous dancers Karen and Marcus Hilton, who are praised for their chemistry and talent on stage, each pair will perform these movements with accuracy, demonstrating both their technical proficiency and their emotional bond.
As they glide across the dance floor, these competitors will embody the spirit of dance itself—dynamic, expressive, and utterly captivating. With each turn and dip, they will remind us all of why we love this art form so deeply.
As we approach this exciting event, one thing is clear: the RSCUAA Sports Festival and Conference Dance Sport Competition is more than just a contest; it’s a celebration of connection, artistry, and athleticism. FINALLY, ISUFST HOSTS THE HISTORIC RSCUAA '24!
The wait is over, and the action begins!
The 2024 Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (RSCUAA) Sports Festival officially kicks off this Monday, December 15, 2024, staged by the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST). This is the first time ISUFST has hosted this event, which brings together more than 3,500 athletes, coaches, officials, and organizers from 13 state universities throughout Western Visayas to compete in 42 events across 22 venues.
Dr. Nordy D. Siason Jr., President of ISUFST, expressed his pride and excitement for this historic occasion. "Today represents a historic milestone for ISUFST. "Although we were originally set to host in 2019, unexpected challenges put things on hold. But now, we're finally ready to welcome all the participants and guests," he shared. "Despite the setbacks, we're excited to see this dream finally come to life."
The president also thanked the local government units, partner universities and organizations, generous supporters, and the ISUFST community for their unwavering dedication and support. "This event is a collective achievement. The commitment of our local communities and the ISUFST family has been instrumental in bringing this event to life," Dr. Siason added.
What makes this year's RSCUAA even more historic is that it may also be the last time state universities from Negros Occidental will participate, as the Negros Island Region (NIR) Act takes effect soon. This change will alter the competition landscape in future years, making this gathering particularly poignant.
Special guests graced the day's activities, including national athlete-turned-beauty queen Alexie Mae Brooks. National and local public servants also attended and showed their support. Monday morning affairs included the Solidarity Meeting at 8 a.m., a Parade at 3 p.m., and the official Opening Ceremony at 4 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., the LGU Night showcased local culture and hospitality, offering a moment of celebration and camaraderie before RSCUAA faculty, coaches, organizers, and guests.
This year's festival spans six key billeting areas in the fourth district of Iloilo, ensuring that every participant is well-catered for. The theme of "One Western Visayas: Promoting Peace, Inclusivity, and Well-Being through Sports" underscores the importance of collaboration, respect, and the shared goal of fostering a more harmonious and inclusive region.
Regional Association of State Universities and Colleges (RASUC VI) Chairman and Northern Iloilo State University (NISU) President Dr. Bobby Gerardo elaborated, "This year's theme resonates deeply with the core values that unite us as institutions and individuals committed to excellence, integrity, and the holistic development of our youth. In the spirit of sportsmanship, we compete and celebrate our region's rich diversity and boundless potential."
The six-day event will feature exciting competitions across multiple venues. Baseball will take place at Anilao National High School (ANHS). At the same time, Barotac Nuevo barangay gyms will host 3x3 Basketball in Jalaud, Women's Volleyball in Lico-an, Arnis in Bungca, and Women's Basketball in Tiwi. In Lapaz, Iloilo City, Billiards and Badminton will be played at Gaisano City, and Futsal and Pencak Silat are set for ISATU. Beach Volleyball and Softball will occur at the ISUFST Dumagas Campus, while Sepak Takraw Men will be at Barotac Nuevo National Comprehensive High School.
Martial arts events, including Karate and Taekwondo, along with Volleyball Men's events, will be held at ISUFST Main Campus-Tiwi Site. Chess, E-Sports Mobile Legends, and Sepak Takraw Women's events will take place at the Main Campus-Poblacion Site. Athletic events, including Football, Lawn Tennis, Swimming, and Table Tennis, will be hosted at the Iloilo Sports Complex in Magsaysay Village, Lapaz, Iloilo City. Boxing will be staged in Passi City at the same time.
This year's competition is expected to be fierce, as universities battle it for top honors. Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISATU) emerged as the overall champion in RSCUAA 2023 with 45 golds, 37 silvers, and 20 bronze medals, with West Visayas State University (WVSU) following closely behind. Other schools such as Guimaras State University (GSU), University of Antique (UA), Capiz State University (CAPSU), and ISUFST, along with Aklan State University (ASU), University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), NISU, Carlos Hilado Memorial State University (CHMSU), State University of Northern Negros (SUNN), Central Philippines State University (CPSU), and the Philippine Normal University (PNU) Visayas, are all in strong contention for this year's coveted titles. The competing universities, to note, are home to more than 115,000 college students.
Dr. Siason reflected on the event's significance not only for ISUFST but for the region as a whole. "The importance of today goes beyond sports. It's about creating lasting bonds and strengthening the spirit of unity among our universities. This event celebrates our collective strength and our commitment to excellence," he concluded. In the heart of ISUFST’s inaugural RSCUAA hosting, where sportsmanship, resilience, and passion converge, lies an echo of the Roman poet Juvenal’s timeless words: “mens sana in corpore sano”—a healthy mind in a healthy body. While the ancient Romans may have grappled with sedentary excess and indulgence, today, the same notion of balanced health endures, though it has evolved into a call for personal and collective well-being. What better arena than the RSCUAA 2024, with its gathering of spirited young athletes from across Region VI, to see these values come alive?
At first glance, sports might seem all about the body. Yet science, history, and common sense tell us that athletic pursuits shape the mind as much as the physique. The RSCUAA, beyond its roster of games, is an experiment in building stronger minds through physical challenges. Neuroscientists like Wendy Suzuki have revealed that exercise enhances brain health by promoting neurogenesis and releasing neurotransmitters that regulate mood, focus, and resilience. Thus, the vigorous physical demands of basketball, volleyball, and football here at RSCUAA don’t just sculpt muscles; they sharpen minds and nourish spirit, fortifying these athletes for life’s non-physical contests.
Historically, society’s emphasis on mental versus physical health has shifted like a pendulum. Ancient Romans, particularly the elite, often indulged in luxurious lifestyles, a habit that led to “rich man’s diseases” like gout, caused by excess and lack of physical activity. They, too, had to confront the consequences of their choices, just as we do today in a world increasingly reliant on healthcare systems to remedy preventable ailments. The philosophy behind “mens sana in corpore sano” emphasizes that health cannot simply be outsourced; it’s an individual responsibility. RSCUAA is a testament to this ideal, as students push themselves, not merely as competitors but as custodians of their mental and physical health.
The concept of “mens sana in corpore sano” resonates with our modern understanding of holistic health. And the physical feats on display at RSCUAA underscore that health isn’t merely the absence of illness. A holistic view of health sees the body and mind as intertwined. ISUFST, hosting its first-ever RSCUAA, epitomizes this through its focus on sports as a means to inspire its community—not just in athletic prowess but in integrity, social justice, and discipline. These principles are as foundational to the university’s identity as its aquamarine colors and motto, and their expression here aligns beautifully with the event’s theme: “One Western Visayas: Promoting Peace, Inclusivity, and Well-Being through Sports.”
This focus on balanced development is perhaps most visible through the fisheries university’s careful planning, which aims to make the festival a rich cultural experience. From opening ceremonies to solidarity nights, the event brings together athletes, leaders, and spectators in a shared spirit of cultural pride and mutual respect. The brain, like the body, thrives on diverse stimuli. In offering participants from Panay, Guimaras, and Negros experiences of culture alongside competition, ISUFST fosters mental resilience through community, just as ancient games did for their societies.
In our fast-paced lives, it’s easy to see sports as a physical outlet rather than a mental and emotional tonic. Yet, research shows that regular movement improves self-esteem, empathy, and decision-making, qualities these athletes develop through every game. Psychologists have noted that team sports, in particular, cultivate empathy and trust, essential traits for the leaders of tomorrow. The camaraderie seen on the court often becomes lifelong friendships that shape careers and mindsets far beyond the games. Here, too, ISUFST’s inclusive vision of the RSCUAA embodies not just physical fitness but emotional and mental growth for each participant.
Though Juvenal’s phrase might have mocked the elite prayers of his time, in today’s context, “mens sana in corpore sano” reminds us that health—whether physical or mental—is an active endeavor. Attaining it demands not only movement but mindful living. One coach, observing students’ dedication at this year’s RSCUAA, likened their discipline to “building resilience through joy.” This fun in movement, she noted, is a profound antidote to the sedentary pressures of modern life, which often constrain young minds to passive learning environments.
Yet, just as ISUFST stands proud to host this year’s RSCUAA, there’s a greater message at play: that true strength is found in a healthy balance. Physical training, while essential, must be complemented by mental endurance. The RSCUAA athletes embody this union of body and mind, and as they compete among each other, they remind us that each sprint, dive, or shot is a testament to a mindset that values both the finish line and the journey. To observe them compete is to see the Latin adage brought to life in motion and spirit.
As the games continue, spectators and participants alike are witnessing more than athletic feats. They’re experiencing the vibrant, full-circle idea that to be healthy is to be whole—not just fit or mentally sharp but balanced, prepared to face challenges on and off the field. ISUFST’s role in hosting RSCUAA is both historic and symbolic, standing not only as an organizer but as a community that believes in cultivating well-rounded leaders for the future.
Juvenal’s words continue to echo, perhaps more urgently than ever: A sound mind in a sound body. The athletes at RSCUAA from 14 different state universities and the values of ISUFST are a collective call to nurture both. As the cheers and applause ring out across the campus, one can’t help but be reminded of the lesson every participant embodies: strength is found not only in the body but in the mind, and together, they build a resilience that defines the spirit of RSCUAA.

The excitement is palpable as the RSCUAA Sports Festival and Conference 2024 kicks off in Western Visayas. Beginning today, December 15, 2024, athletes, coaches, students, parents, and supporters from across the region converge at the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) and various sports venues to compete, celebrate, and build friendships. With the theme “One Western Visayas: Promoting Peace, Inclusivity, and Well-Being through Sports,” RSCUAA 2024 promises to be more than a competitive event—it is a tribute to shared values, unity, and the bridging power of sports. Negros Occidental’s participation in this week-long event may be its last in Region VI as it prepares to join the new Negros Island Region (NIR). This change adds a special significance, reminding us of the evolving bonds within Western Visayas.
This year’s theme encourages us to see sports as more than competition. It’s about embracing unity, respect, and well-being—values that enrich every game and every friendship. Celebrating inclusivity, RSCUAA highlights each athlete’s unique contribution, building a festival where everyone feels valued beyond the scoreboard. This is not just about winning; it’s about creating lasting connections and fostering community spirit.
The emphasis on peace calls for respect and camaraderie, making the competition a way to honor the game and each other. By embracing these values, RSCUAA inspires a legacy of sportsmanship that participants can bring back to their communities, where it continues to inspire unity. In RSCUAA, peace manifests in a festival where rivalries give way to collaboration. Games take on greater significance when athletes shake hands, exchange smiles, and cheer each other on, embodying the spirit of solidarity. Events focused on peace historically foster environments of respect, reduce tensions, and highlight shared values over differences.
Well-being, a vital theme component, has gained prominence in sports today. In an increasingly fast-paced world, the physical benefits of exercise are paired with the mental health advantages that come from team sports. A 2022 article from Sports Psychology Today emphasizes that athletes who prioritize mental well-being show resilience—a critical skill both on and off the field. By focusing on well-being, the RSCUAA festival reminds participants of the importance of balance, self-care, and perspective, resonating well beyond the five-day event.
RSCUAA 2024 is a showcase of athletic talent and a celebration of the diverse cultures across Western Visayas. Hosting the event gives ISUFST a platform to highlight the region’s vibrant traditions, festivals, and renowned hospitality. For athletes and supporters alike, this cultural exchange amplifies the value of diversity, illustrating how differences strengthen communities. When the games conclude, and the awards are given, the friendships and bonds formed across cities and islands will endure, weaving a tighter social fabric across the region.
Beyond athletic excellence, RSCUAA 2024 is a platform for character development. While winning offers immediate gratification, playing with integrity leaves a lasting impact. Studies published in the Journal of Sportsmanship and Ethics (2020) reveal that athletes who prize honesty and teamwork find deeper fulfillment in their achievements. This year’s theme urges participants to uphold these values, underscoring that victory lies in staying true to one’s principles, even amid intense competition.
Inclusivity at RSCUAA extends beyond athletes to include fans, parents, faculty, coaches, administrators, and patrons who shape the event’s atmosphere. Research from Sports Psychology Today (2022) shows that children whose parents model respectful behavior during games tend to experience less anxiety and develop a positive attitude toward sports. By embracing inclusivity, fans and supporters transform each cheer and word of encouragement into a powerful force that inspires athletes to perform their best, highlighting community support’s crucial role in sportsmanship.
Throughout the festival, athletes will face moments of challenge and adversity, inconvenience and inadvertence, with their responses reflecting their character. Drawing inspiration from athletes like Serena Williams, who exemplifies emotional control under pressure, RSCUAA participants can view setbacks as growth opportunities. Self-control, patience, and due tolerance are invaluable skills that foster resilience, equipping athletes to handle both victory and defeat with poise—an essential lesson for life beyond sports.
Despite being new to the task, ISUFST’s dedication to the RSCUAA 2024 theme is evident in its meticulous preparations, spanning logistics to cultural events planned for each evening. This commitment highlights the sense of community and hospitality that Western Visayas is celebrated for. From the Mr. and Ms. RSCUAA Pageant to social and cultural presentations, the experience is designed to be rich, memorable, and meaningful for everyone involved. This ‘one region, one game’ festival serves as a reminder that the sports festival is much more than an athletic event; it’s a legacy of shared values and cultural pride.
As we celebrate RSCUAA 2024 as one united Western Visayas, let the games be fierce but friendly, competition intense yet inclusive, and camaraderie enduring well past the final whistle. Ultimately, the real winners of RSCUAA 2024 will be those who carry the spirit of sportsmanship, peace, inclusivity, and well-being back into their communities, inspiring others to join in building a brighter, more connected region despite what the future holds.

The wait is over, and the action begins!
The 2024 Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (RSCUAA) Sports Festival officially starts off today, December 15, 2024, hosted by the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST).
The president also thanked the local government units, partner organizations, generous supporters, and the ISUFST community for their unwavering dedication and support.
Special guests will grace the day's activities, including national athlete-turned-beauty queen Alexie Mae Brooks and Philippine Sports Commission Consultant Raymundo Lapating. National and local public servants are also expected to attend and show their support. Today's morning affairs include the Solidarity Meeting at 8 a.m., a Parade at 3 p.m., and the official Opening Ceremony at 4 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., the LGU Night will showcase local culture and hospitality, offering a moment of celebration and camaraderie.
Other schools such as Guimaras State University (GSU), University of Antique (UA), and ISUFST, along with Aklan State University (ASU), University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), Northern Iloilo State University (NISU), and others, are all in strong contention for this year's coveted titles. The competing universities, to note, are home to more than 110,000 college students.
Dr. Siason reflected on the event's significance not only for ISUFST but for the region as a whole. "The importance of today goes beyond sports. It's about creating lasting bonds and strengthening the spirit of unity among our universities. This event celebrates our collective strength and our commitment to excellence," he concluded.

The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) Men's Baseball Team has once again etched its name in the annals of collegiate baseball game history last RSCUAA 2023 held at Carlos Hilado Memorial State University (CHMSU). Despite facing a myriad of challenges, such as limited equipment, subpar practice venues, financial constraints, and the demanding academic rigors of their courses, the team has clinched an impressive eight consecutive Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (RSCUAA) championships.
Under the supervision and guidance of their former Head Coach Ricky Ramos, former Assistant Coach Dave Soniso, and their dedicated trainer Romeo Ballaret, the team has consistently defied expectations. Led by their resilient and dedicated team captain, John Patrick Iquiña, the players had exhibited unwavering dedication and a relentless pursuit of excellence in the last RSCUAA 2023.
"Kabudlay gid mag practice, kapin pa kulang kag mga guba ang iban namon nga equipments, pati ang schedule namon nga wala ga santo permi" Iquiña shared. "Pero bisan amo lg na mga gamit namon, isa na sila ka patimaan nga bisan kulang kag mga guba, nangin pundasyon man sila para mahasa amon mga abilidad sa tunga sang field, wala ini nangin hadlang para madulaan kami sang paglaum kag dugang nga baskog sa amon hampang."
The team's dominance extended beyond the national level as they recently secured a silver medal at the National SCUAA in Tarlac, showcasing their exceptional skills against other competing schools. This achievement further solidified their reputation as a force to be reckoned with in Philippine collegiate baseball.
As the defending champions and hosts of the upcoming RSCUAA 2024, the ISUFST Baseball Team is now faced with a unique set of challenges. The pressure of playing in front of their home crowd is huge, and the expectation is high.
Although they are proud of their past successes and the legacy that they're defending, they are also keenly aware to the challenges that lie ahead. Being that some of the important players have already graduated while others dropped out of school for some reasons, there has been another challenge of the team. Thus, new faces have emerged, eager to prove their worth and contribute to the team’s legacy.
As the team gears up for the upcoming RSCUAA on December 15-20, their eyes are firmly set on a historic nine-peat. The players are eager to continue their winning streak and cement their legacy as one of the most successful collegiate baseball programs not only in Western Visayas but in the whole State Colleges and Universities in the Philippines.
"Ipadayon pa ah, kapin pa last year ko na lang ja kag iban ko nga mga upod," said Iquiña. "Maka nine-peat kami this coming RSCUAA, isa guid ka testamento kag history sa amon eskwelahan ja. Amo na gabaka-baka man kami practice para madefend ang title nga gin himakas sang amon mga seniors."
The ISUFST Men's Baseball Team's journey is a true inspiration. Their unyielding dedication paired with their great skill is the reason they became shinning lights of hope among aspiring athletes in their colleges to all the neighboring schools around them. Their story also reminds everyone that the hardest to tackle challenges can indeed be overcome through determination and hard work as they strive towards achieving greatness.
Can they defy the odds and once again claim a historic back-to-back title continuing the legacy to achieve a 9-peat victory in baseball this upcoming RSCUAA 2024?

December 10, 2024
A team of students, faculty, and volunteers are gathering today, December 10, at the Speech Laboratory of Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) Main-Tiwi Site, Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo, for a training workshop designed to equip participants with the skills necessary for effective event announcing and real-time documentation during the upcoming RSCUAA Sports Festival and Conference. The regional event will occur from December 15 to 20, 2024, celebrating the theme "One Western Visayas: Promoting Peace, Inclusivity, and Well-Being through Sports."
The training-workshop, guided by experienced hosts and speakers, focused on equipping participants with practical skills in event announcing and documentation. The session, which kicked off at 9 a.m., included an opening program with messages from ISUFST's top administrators, including Dr. Ramir C. Torreces, Chairperson of the Announcers and Documenters Committee, and Dr. Joan Belga, the Vice President for Academic Affairs (VPAA).
In his opening remarks, Dr. Torreces emphasized the importance of announcers and documenters' roles in shaping live events. "Announcers and documenters are the voices and record-keepers of our events," he said. "They provide clarity and transparency and help craft narratives and preserve vital records for future reference."
Dr. Joan M. Belga, Vice President for Academic Affairs, encouraged the attendees to take full advantage of the workshop, noting, "This is a great opportunity for you to learn from the best and practice at the best platform, RSCUAA."
Prof. Jomel B. Guintivano, adviser of The Sea Treasure Publication of the Tiwi Site, presented the rationale behind the committee members' tasks and responsibilities. He outlined the key skills and decorum expected of announcers and documenters, stressing the importance of professionalism, accuracy, and clear communication. "Being a part of this committee requires not only technical skills but also a high level of responsibility and discipline," he explained.
Prof. Guintivano also highlighted the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and protocols participants must follow during the event. He emphasized troubleshooting techniques for handling unexpected situations, ensuring the team could adapt seamlessly to any challenges during the festival.
The training covers various aspects of event coverage, including real-time documentation and effective announcing techniques. Participants are expected to learn to manage time constraints, handle unexpected situations, and maintain professionalism under pressure—skills crucial for successful event coordination. Faculty members, including Prof. Valyn Maestre, Dr. Rex Paulino, and Prof. Glysa Marie Regidor, are to provide expert instruction on "Documenting Events in Real-Time," "Effective Announcing," and "Announcing and Spiels."
The afternoon session includes a mock announcing activity, allowing participants to practice their skills in a controlled environment. "It's not just about theory; it's about real-world applications and honing skills that will be invaluable during RSCUAA," Dr. Torreces added.
As RSCUAA 2024 approaches, the workshop hopes to equip announcers and documenters with the knowledge and skills needed to fulfill their roles during the event. With these preparations, ISUFST is poised to deliver a well-organized and impactful RSCUAA Sports Festival and Conference 2024, embodying the spirit of peace, inclusivity, and well-being that the event promotes.

IMPULSES: Unveiling the spirit behind team names,
News Core Admin | December 9, 2024
By Herman M. Lagon
In every state university, team names and colors are more than just labels—they reflect the school’s heart and soul. As the Western Visayas Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (RSCUAA) Sports Festival and Conference 2024 approaches, schools from across the region will unite in Iloilo to compete from December 15 to 20. Each one proudly carries its unique team name and colors, representing its core values and dreams.
For example, with their gold and royal blue, the WV RSCUAA 2023 overall champion “TechnoBees” of ISATU perfectly represents innovation and vibrant energy. Like bees who tirelessly work and collaborate, ISATU embodies a school that thrives on excellence in technology and sustainability. The gold stands for the wealth of knowledge, while royal blue speaks to the trust and dependability the school inspires in its students, faculty, and community.
WVSU’s “West Marals” take their name from the maral deer, a symbol of resilience, endurance, and pride. The Pantone Blue they wear signals trust and stability, qualities that WVSU has upheld for over 120 years as a leader in education and social transformation. Known for producing top professionals in various fields, the “West Marals” are more than athletes—they are part of a long tradition of contributing to nation-building through education.

Countdown begins for ISUFST’s historic hosting of RSCUAA 2024
October 28, 2024
Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo City—The excitement is up as Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) counts down to its inaugural hosting of the highly anticipated Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (RSCUAA) Sports Festival and Convention 2024. The official 50-day countdown began on Saturday, October 26, signaling the start of a dynamic preparation phase leading up to the festival's opening on December 15, 2024. As of today, Monday, October 28, there are "48 days more to go"—and the thrill of the upcoming event is palpable across the campus and community, as ISUFST is set to welcome top athletes and officials from across Region VI.
Marking ISUFST's first time hosting the RSCUAA Sports Festival, this year's event promises to be unforgettable. During a recent strategic planning session, ISUFST President Dr. Nordy Siason, Jr. reflected on this milestone with a sense of fulfillment. "This hosting is long overdue," Dr. Siason said, underscoring that ISUFST had initially been selected to host in 2019 but faced setbacks due to leadership changes, the pandemic, and the university's conversion to full university status. With resilience and ambition, ISUFST is now poised to deliver a remarkable regional event. "We are ready to rise to the occasion and show that ISUFST can deliver an event of this magnitude," he continued, underscoring the university's commitment to excellence.
With 14 participating institutions, this year's RSCUAA, themed "One Western Visayas: Promoting Peace, Inclusivity, and Well-Being through Sports," celebrates unity, athleticism, and camaraderie across the region. It may also mark the final participation of Negros Occidental as part of Region VI as the province transitions to the newly created Negros Island Region (NIR) under the NIR Act. ISUFST is seizing this opportunity to showcase the Ilonggo spirit, with Dr. Siason sharing plans to collaborate with local government leaders to ensure visiting athletes experience authentic regional culture, including festivals, cuisine, and the famous Ilonggo hospitality.
Preparations have been comprehensive, including a benchmarking visit by ISUFST's core organizing team to Carlos Hilado Memorial State University (CHMSU) in Negros Occidental. The insights gained from CHMSU's successful hosting last year shape ISUFST's approach, ensuring a well-executed and memorable RSCUAA experience. At the heart of ISUFST's campaign is its newly christened team, the "ISDA Blue Thunders," embodying the university's guiding principles of Integrity, Social Justice, Discipline, and Academic Excellence. The ISDA Blue Thunders are set to electrify the RSCUAA stage, representing ISUFST's commitment to unity, athletic prowess, and social impact.
As the daily countdown advances, ISUFST's preparations continue in full force, driven by the collective excitement and dedication of students, faculty, and the broader ISUFST community. Dr. Siason concluded with a call to action, inviting everyone to celebrate the unity and excellence defining the 2024 RSCUAA Sports Festival, a historic first for ISUFST and a testament to its growth and achievements. ‘ISDA Blue Thunders’ IS THE OFFICIAL ISUFST TEAM MONIKER
October 21, 2024
Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) has announced its university team name: "ISDA Blue Thunders," coinciding with the institution's inaugural hosting of the Regional SCUAA Sports Festival and Conference set this December 15-20, 2024. The announcement was made via a message from ISUFST President Dr. Nordy D. Siason, Jr., published on the official ISUFST Facebook page.
"ISDA Blue Thunders" embodies profound significance inherent to the university's identity and mission. "ISDA" denotes the university's legacy in fisheries science and technology, embodying the fundamental principles of Integrity, Social Justice, Discipline, and Academic Excellence at the heart of ISUFST's guiding principles. Dr. Siason asserts that the moniker symbolizes both sportsmanship and the university's overarching mission to elevate the disadvantaged and promote positive transformation.
"Integrity" at ISUFST encompasses not only honesty but also professionalism, accountability, and the university community's dedication to public service. "Social Justice" represents the university's commitment to guaranteeing equal rights and opportunities for all individuals, particularly those who are marginalized. ISUFST's interpretation of social justice put premium on empathy and the maximization of quality education to empower the Ilonggo families.
"Discipline" encapsulates the ISUFST community's commitment to cultivating a culture of academic rigor, accountability, and respect. On the other hand, "Academic Excellence" at ISUFST encompasses more than merely cultivating exceptional graduates in fisheries, agriculture, education, management, and technology. It pertains to cultivating individuals who are not only proficient in their respective domains but also motivated by principles that enhance national progress and global competitiveness. ISUFST endeavors to develop leaders who exemplify integrity and purpose in their endeavors, with the objective of making a significant impact on society.
The selection of Aqua Blue in the school's name is laden with symbolism. It denotes trust and unity, fundamental values that reflect the collective strength of the ISUFST community, particularly in confronting challenges collaboratively. Aqua Blue is directly linked to the university's flagships in fisheries and agriculture, representing both the sea and sky—fundamental components of life and development. This dual symbolism underscores ISUFST's profound dedication to sustainability and innovation in academia, research, and extension, in accordance with the blue economy and the UN SDGs.
The term "Thunder" in "ISDA Blue Thunders" serves as a potent metaphor rather than merely a vivid image. Thunder embodies the energy, passion, and ethos that ISUFST seeks to instill in its students, athletes, faculty, staff, and the wider community. Like thunder seizing attention, ISUFST is committed to championing the marginalized and advancing equality, inclusivity, and social justice. The name reflects the institution's ambition in athletics and its dedication to social impact, ensuring that each individual is recognized and enabled to thrive.
Dr. Siason underscored that the “ISDA Blue Thunders” symbolize not merely athletics but the values and aspirations of the entire ISUFST community. “The 'ISDA Blue Thunders' exemplify resilience, leadership, and the resolve to effect change, both in athletics and within our communities.”
To note, the ISUFST-hosted 2024 RSCUAA Sports Festival and Conference will adopt the theme "One Western Visayas: Promoting Peace, Inclusivity, and Well-Being through Sports," reflecting ISUFST's mission to cultivate unity, equality, and empowerment. Dr. Siason urged all ISUFST members to personify these values and share them to other participating universities and colleges throughout the five-day event.
As ISUFST prepares to host the event for the inaugural time in its 67-year history, the introduction of the "ISDA Blue Thunders" signifies a new chapter for the university. Under this team name, each ISDA Blue Thunder is urged to transform RSCUAA 2024 into a celebration of unity, resilience, and excellence.

October 15, 2024, Dumangas, Iloilo—The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) is in full swing, gearing up for its first-ever hosting of the Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (RSCUAA) Sports Festival, scheduled for December 15-20, 2024. The university kicked off its internal strategic planning session today at ISUFST Dumangas Campus, focusing on the logistics and preparations for this landmark regional event, which will gather athletes and officials from Iloilo, Capiz, Antique, Aklan, Guimaras, and Negros Occidental.
Today's session, led by university officials and attended by 134 faculty, staff, and students from 13 different working committees, highlighted key strategic objectives and committee roles to ensure the event's success. In his opening remarks, ISUFST President Dr. Nordy D. Siason, Jr., CESO VI, said, "This hosting is long overdue. ISUFST was supposed to host the RSCUAA games in 2019, but various circumstances delayed our plans. Now, we are ready to show that ISUFST is up to the challenge. Let’s showcase the culture of hospitality of ISUFST and embrace the welcoming approach in helping and assisting the RSCUAA participants.”
The strategic planning, led by the institution, underscores a collaborative effort to ensure that the event will be well-organized and memorable. Prof. Clarisol Belo, Technical Committee Chairperson, presented the results of the strategic planning session held last October 10-11, 2024, at Park Inn, SM Complex, Mandurriao, Iloilo City. The session was attended by SUC Presidents, Tournament Managers, and Registrars, solidifying plans and responsibilities for the event.
Dr. Edmer D. Bernardo, Chairperson of the General Secretariat, reminded committee members of their crucial roles in ensuring that RSCUAA 2024 becomes a meaningful experience for all. “We are facilitators, hosts, enablers, and agents of peace. Our responsibility is to make sure that everybody—all the expected 5,000 RSCUAA participants and facilitators, excluding the thousands of students and local communities that will benefit and participate in the process—will have a great experience during this five-day event,” he emphasized. Bernardo further added, "We hope that ours will be remembered as a pleasant RSCUAA experience."
The planning session included presentations from the Sports Technical Committee and General Secretariat, along with breakout sessions for various working committees such as logistics, security, and accommodation. This year’s theme, “One Western Visayas: Promoting Peace, Inclusivity, and Well-Being through Sports,” encapsulates the spirit of unity and camaraderie that the festival aims to promote.
Significantly, this year’s event will mark the final participation of Negros Occidental in RSCUAA Region VI, as the province transitions to the newly-formed Negros Island Region (NIR) following the enactment of the NIR Act. With this backdrop, the 2024 RSCUAA promises a competitive and collaborative atmosphere, as 13 state universities across the region prepare to compete in various sports categories, fostering athletic excellence and strengthening regional bonds.
In addition to event logistics, Dr. Siason and other ISUFST officials are actively engaging with local government units and private partners to ensure the event not only showcases athletic talent but also highlights the local culture and hospitality. "We are working closely with mayors, DepEd officials, and local collaborators to make this an unforgettable event for the participants. This is our chance to show the world that ISUFST can deliver a regional event of this magnitude,” Dr. Siason added.
The university has been meticulous in its preparations, including conducting a benchmarking activity at Carlos Hilado Memorial State University (CHMSU) in Negros Occidental to learn from their successful hosting of last year’s RSCUAA festival. Furthermore, ISUFST officials have coordinated ocular inspections with various local government units (LGUs) and agencies to ensure that all billeting concerns are addressed.
The event will see 13 state universities, including the host, ISUFST, along with Aklan State University (ASU), Capiz State University (CapSU), CHMSU, Central Philippines State University (CPSU), Guimaras State University (GSU), Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISATU), Northern Iloilo State University (NISU), Philippine Normal University-Visayas (PNUV), State University of Northern Negros (SUNN), University of Antique (UA), University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV), and West Visayas State University (WVSU). These institutions will come together to compete in various sports categories, promoting unity, excellence, and regional pride over the course of five days.
The comprehensive strategic planning currently in progress reflects ISUFST’s commitment to delivering a successful and memorable RSCUAA 2024 experience. As the university prepares to host this historic event, it aims to set a high standard for future athletic festivals, celebrating sportsmanship, inclusivity, and the shared identity of Western Visayas.
Through planning and collaboration with regional stakeholders, ISUFST is on track to make RSCUAA 2024 an exceptional event, serving as a showcase of both athletic prowess and the warmth of the community it represents.
